It's Not Always Brooke

There's this notion that Ridge always chooses Brooke but that's patently false. I don't even have to go back to the 90s to disprove that. Back in 2015, Brooke threw herself at Ridge but he told her to go pound sand because he wanted to be with Caroline, whom he eventually married. At no point did he leave Caroline for Brooke. Their marriage was unfortunately over before Ridge fell back into his old pattern. Point is, he can and has chosen women over Brooke.

No one says he hasn't chosen other women over her a few times. How else could he ever have been married to the two Carolines and Taylor? And there were times when Brooke chose other men like Eric, Nick or Bill over Ridge too. But just like none of these men could ever make Brooke stop loving Ridge, Brooke is the only woman Ridge has never stopped loving for 35 years and has always come back to, no matter how happy he might have been with other women for a while.

Regarding Ridge and Caroline Jr, it was always obvious that they weren't meant to last but were only put together because Ridge & Katie had turned out to be a snoozefest and Bell wasn't ready yet to reunite TK's Ridge with Brooke so soon after the recast.
Ridge was clearly in a midlife crisis after returning from Paris, and being with Caroline made him feel rejuvenated. But that bubble was always supposed to burst sooner or later, because their personalities and their goals in life were just too different to make the age gap between them irrelevant. Douglas was only the catalyst that made their marriage implode, not the reason. Ridge broke up with Caroline because he realized they had been holding onto a fantasy that couldn't withstand reality and they just weren't each other's destiny. That's also why neither of them ever looked back, which is pretty unusual on BB where relationships get revisited all the time and certain characters are still hung up on their exes even decades later.
