That was one BB's biggest failures. Not only did he break them up despite their incredible natural chemistry, he created Douglas as a permanent blockade to a reunion, and then killed Caroline off.

I don't think he ever really loved her long term. He was very grateful to her for helping him learn to draw again, so he helped her learn to walk again. Then the gratitude on both sides turned to an infatuation. If Ridge and Caroline had really loved each other, he wouldn't have let her go. And he did. It's always Brooke for Ridge.
