Maybe the show did it this way to end Thope and their family. It felt like a closure today imo.

Yes, it sounded final with Douglas, and it came full circle also when he brought it back to Caroline. I think that when Thomas comes back, he might not have Douglas. Douglas might be in New York. This might be the end of Douglas in the storytelling. Just guessing.
