Thomas knew it would come out sooner than later; he just did not count on that Douglas would see Hope first and they talk before he had a chance for all of them to talk it out and they both agree that Thomas would leave and take Douglas to Paris, which of course Hope does not have to agree to.

Hope may not have to agree to it, but she will. Douglas make it crystal clear that he wants to go with his dad, and the reasons why. And what would happen if she didn't agree. :-D
