I believe the term comes from an old 1940's era Hollywood movie titled "Gaslight". It is about a woman who's husband makes her believe that she is going insane. If I remember correctly the man murdered his wife's aunt who left the wife her estate. He played mind games with his wife in hopes that he could have her declared insane and put her in a mental hospital so he could spend her money. What Thomas did to Hope and Douglas concerning Beth was gaslighting.
