Wrong. Ridge started to care about hurting his father when Eric had that accident that made him temporarily lose his eyesight. Brooke felt obligated to stay with him until he recovered, instead of moving in with Ridge, and when Ridge was watching them together he realized how much Brooke and the baby meant to Eric. That's when he decided that he couldn't destroy his father's little family. So he staged an affair with a model and made sure Brooke was walking in on them, hoping she would run back to Eric. The next day he boarded the plane to St. Thomas to propose to Taylor instead, after telling Stephanie and Thorne how much he loved and wanted Brooke but that he had to make this sacrifice for his father. The narrative couldn't have been any clearer that Taylor was his second choice and that he only proposed to her because he couldn't bear hurting Eric.
