Why is the show not letting go? They’ve got their new pairings. Why is this punishing plot continuing.

It's just my guess that Thomas is going to break down and confess (not likely, in my opinion), or someone will overhear him replaying his vile deed, or he'll lose or misplace his phone and someone will hear the recording.

As I said, just my guess. I'm not usually right, so don't take anything I say as anything more than a guess. LOL
