So what’s the use in owning shares? The money?

Yup...dividends....which can be quite hefty. And if you want to sell, you can too....but other shareholders get right to first refusal, then it probably is open to family members who are non-share holders. The way it read for RL was, they have a board, and shareholders make up most of the board. They can voice their opinions and they are listened to, and the ideas are welcome, but in the end, the President or Chairman of the Board has final say. And there are privately held companies that will have CEO's that own no shares at all. Now the President or COB almost always is a shareholder because they are founders, or have been with the company for many years. This all has to do with the articles of incorporation and how it was set up. And, in the case of FC and what Mr. Douglas had set up, Stephanie had final say-so over the company. And, if I understand what she did when she died, she passed that on to Eric. Not saying I am 100% right, just going by the transcripts.
