They have to say something as they had no actress on contract to portray taylor

They could easily have said something else to explain her absence, like an illness that kept her from traveling overseas for almost 3 years and that she didn't want her kids to know about.
Like it or not, being absent from her kids' lives for all this time because she was too hung up on Ridge is a part of the character's history that can't be denied.

Exactly. And since the character herself has had dialogue that addressed the fact that she missed all those events in her kids' lives, it's firmly implanted in the history now. It isn't something that they just ignore. It was written in.
