What was the point of the Deacon/Taylor scenes?

It seems like Tridge is getting back together (fine with me), but I wonder what was even the point of the scenes of Teacon that seemed to be a chemistry test if they were not planning anything with it…

I personally think the story changed course. But it could also come back around.
