Neither of them were. Hope was deeply depressed and just kind of wandering through life at the time.

No, she was deep in grief over thinking she lost a child that Thomas knew was still alive but instead of telling he used that grief and used his little son to manipulate her into marrying him. She was repulsed by his advances because she wasn't the least bit interested in him.

Hope was definitely not wandering through life. She was being manipulated and steered through it by a sick pervert.
