Firtly, Thomas' intentions are still very dubious right now. Does he really want to be a better father and a better person, or is he conning everyone for the umpteenth time. Based on his recent actions (associating with Sheila, stealing phones, invading privacy, hitting on his cousin's girlfriend) and his latest fantasies (Hope kissing him), I would be very cautious. Does he see Douglas as a son or an object to lure Hope? So far, I see nothing that indicates he has changed.

Secondly, Douglas isn't old and mature enough to choose what's best for him. According to the show, he is still a child, so he is less than 12.
Thirdly, Douglas' opinion wouldn't matter much if there is a custody case. The judges think about what's best for the child, his safety and his education. Not his wishes.
Fourthly, If Douglas leaves Hope's cabin, he will be living at the mansion with his whole family, not just Tom. Eric's mansion has many rooms, a swimming pool, tennis courts, a beautiful view. Any normal kid would be impressed and want to live there. It doesn't mean Thomas is a better parent than Hope or Liam.

And lastly most important part, Douglas ignores everything about his father and his past. If if was a few years older and knew a small fraction of Thomas' past, he would want nothing to do with him. I know if my own dad was a vile child abuser, sexual predator and serial attempted killer, I wouldn't want him in my life, at least not as a father figure. Again the most important is what's best for Douglas.

We don’t think anyone cares because show continues to flirt with Tom’s obsession with Hope. Douglas is secondary. The only purpose it serves is to promote this fake feud.
