How do Emmy nominations work? How prestigious it it? (General)

SonOfMan ⌂, VT, 4/19/2024, 5:41PM (13 days ago)

Does anyone know how they choose between the actors? Is there a jury or something? A specific group of fans? One judge only? Or are there public surveys on social medias? In other words, who is making the decisions?

I have nothing against specific actors, but I am curious when I read the results.
For example : how do J. M. Woods or H. Tom win multiple "Outstanding Lead Actress" awards in such a short time ; while some older actresses like H. Tylo or K. K. Lang never won one in 30 years?
Other example: T. Novlan and M. Atkinson have been leading men for several years, and never even got nominated. But S. Clifton (who hardly appeared on screen since last summer) already won 3 Emmys and I see he got nominated again. I like Liam more than Thomas and Finn as characters and Clifton is one of my favorite actors but if I'm honest, Atkinson and Novlan shone a lot more as actors over the last 12 months. In my opinion. Why have they never won anything, I'm curious.
I repeat it, I have nothing against any of these actors and actresses. I like everyone's acting, but the results sometimes surprise me.

Other interrogation : how prestigious are these nominations and Emmys in the world of cinema? Do actors with zero award have more chances to be written off this soap? Do they get more big stories if they win something? If this soap gets cancelled one day, will actors with awards have more chances to land big roles on other shows?

Sorry, I know it's a lot of question. I've wanted to ask these for a long time. Most of you probably have no idea. But if you know something, I'd like to find out. A comrade asked me these questions a while ago, and I had no idea what to tell him.

I confess to not really knowing about how this works NOW,

But in years past, an actor could nominate or let it be known he was submitting himself for an award.
And the award itself was or could be misleading as some actors and actresses that we would consider a lead actor but did not have a heavy year would be entered into the supporting category. Meaning less competition running against them and better chance to win.

Then over the years they have added more categories, with Actors under a certain age to give the children or younger actors say 15 or 18 more a chance than up against someone like John McCook in his 70's.
Also Guest stars have been added that may only have one of two scenes in an episode. Don't think they have to be on contract. I think this is how JG and Ashley playing Bridget got in.

As far as how much prestige all of this is, hard to tell. Many actors/actresses win these awards and go on forever and do not make it or do not even try to get into prime time or movies.

We know actors and actresses move on after they are written off one show or chose to leave of their own accord, and future employers might look at their record and consider it pay dirt if they can get an Emmy winner, someone the audience will like and respect and add prestige to their show. Others I do not think it makes that much difference now.

And I do not think the money makes any difference, other than the actor themselves might think it they won an award that proves their worth and more fans will pay attention and this could add to their contract when it comes time for renewal.

I don’t take Emmys seriously.

The only person ever nominated from Little House On The Prairie was Melissa Sue Anderson for Mary’s blind story (well deserved nomination, she was fantastic as always),

However Michael and Karen Grassle as well as Matthew Laborteaux and many others deserved nominations as well. Michael could make a person cry by a look without a word.

MSA said in her book that Michael told her she wouldn’t win because of something the Emmys did with one year someone from the West coast won and someone from the East the other year (something like that).

He was right, she didn’t win and it was as he said about the coasts.

(Melissa did win an Emmy in the future, for a different role).

Also The Walking Dead actors were never nominated and they were amazing.

So no, I don’t take Emmys as any proof of anything.

The Walking Dead wasn't a soap opera, was it? From what I know, only actors from B&B and the other 3 american soaps can participate and win these specific Awards. I have never watched Little House on the Prairie (too old for me I guess) so I don't know these actors. But it's instructive, thanks!

Little House on the Prairie was not a soap opera either. It was a drama series that was broadcast in the evening, once a week from 1974 to the early 80's with a few made for tv movies after the series ended.

Back in the day, there was a lot of competition, 9-10 shows at a time, and in its earlier days, Bold was rarely nominated. That explains why older actors often have no Emmys despite being great.

The actors also have to put together a reel to submit. It is their choice. Typically, we don't know if someone submitted unless they tell us. In any given year, you may not feel you have anything worth submitting. I said in a previous post I think there is some strategy involved. The goal is for your show to bring home the most Emmys.
It is probably good for advertisers, but IMO, the Daytime Emmys don't mean a lot in the larger entertainment industry. Most never cross over to prime time or film. Also, not everyone wants to. Some people are just happy to have a job they love. They don't care about fame.

I agree about this..as I do know a talented actor who used to be on a soap but moved on to broadway..he doesn't care about the fame or awards..just loves acting/performing.

I don't know every detail on how it works, but IMO, they don't mean as much as they used to given there are only a few soaps left. And for me, I don't judge an actor based on how many Emmy's they won or none, if they move me say to tears with their powerful performance..that's a sign of great acting imo.

Any recognition by your peers is something to celebrate but I don’t think it’s as prestigious as it used to be. I also believe as an ordinary person that all awards shows have some element of politicking. In many ways all these awards are a popularity contest. It’s not scientific, but it doesn’t matter. I’m sure for an actor being able to say you’re an award winner is a big deal. Congratulations to the nominees! Good luck to all the BB people. They are good actors.
