I’m not really sure what he’s thinking. But I wish Donna could hear his conversations with Quinn. I’m sure it would be an eye opener for her that he doesn’t even talk to her as if he’s thinking about ending the marriage. He’s always been sleazy though. I can’t recall all the details but I remember the first time when he was having an affair with Donna while married to Stephanie. I think there was a fear of being photographed by someone and he slipped out of wherever they were stark naked and was hanging along the cliff wall. That was a really low point for his character. I’m honestly not sure why everyone respects him so much.

The reason why he was hiding on the ledge in 2008 was a little more complex. The affair between Eric and Donna had started when Stephanie was out of town for weeks after her part in Brooke's rape had been exposed. He didn't even keep that affair a secret, the rest of his family already knew about it, and as soon as Stephanie returned, Eric told her he wanted a divorce. But Stephanie refused to let him go and she saw a chance to save her marriage when she learned that Storm had been the one shooting her earlier that year. She blackmailed Donna, telling her the only way she could keep Storm out of jail was to stop seeing Eric. Donna agreed and tried to break up with Eric on some pretext the day he proposed to her. But he didn't want to lose her, and when she eventually admitted to him that Stephanie was blackmailing her, he came up with a plan. He moved back in with Stephanie, pretending he was giving their marriage another chance. But Stephanie got suspicious and hired a private investigator who followed Eric to Donna's apartment and gave Stephanie the address. When she knocked on the door, Eric hid on the ledge outside the window and Stephanie actually believed Donna that Eric wasn't there. But the private investigator, who was waiting in front of the house, took a photo and sold it to the press.

So this wasn't like the current storyline, where Eric loves both women and has no intention of ending his marriage. He had clearly chosen Donna back then, and he was only hiding on the ledge because Stephanie had resorted to desperate measures to keep him.
