How can soaps getaway with sexism in 2022 (General)

I always say it’s so blatant there should be a laugh track and treat it like a spoof.

I feel as if Brooke is the only character to experience payback or karma for her past behaviors in an environment where other characters have done the same things.

Breacon- Ridge pursued Bridget
Tridge - Ridge dumped Brooke and RJ for Taylor’s return
Throoke - Ridge tricked Brooke into admitting she still had feelings for him
Brill - Ridge dumped Brooke and pursued Katie

There’s a pattern here and it’s not just Brooke. How come Ridge faces no karma especially when Brooke moves on and he won’t leave her alone. What makes matters worse is show won’t allow Brooke to stand up to Ridge. Spencer and Forrester men have betrayed parents, children, and siblings.

Maybe by definition soaps are serial dramas that exploit sexist attitudes.

The show writers have always favored the Ridge character. I’m watching season 1 again now and I am floored by how everyone treats Ridge so much better and excuses his failures over Thorne, who was a better person. Bill Sr. treated Thorne better than his own family did.

And this pattern has remained to this day.

It’s why I never ever liked Ridge. What I don’t understand is why it’s ok in 2022?

Stop rewash in same old breakups and female doormats desperate for men it's disgusting

That’s true but it doesn’t just apply to Ridge even.

Look at Carter and Quinn today. Laughing about what they did to Paris. Quinn going on about how she can have who she really wanted, yet a few weeks ago she was painting Donna as horrible.

I don’t understand why the show is written as it is but I don’t think it will ever change.

I don’t think so. You don’t know that Ridge won’t get his this time. That’s what keeps people watching.

And it is Brooke who tolerates the double standard Ridge seems to impose on her. I say seems to impose because she allows it. The question is why doesn’t Brooke stand up for herself? She is completely self-sufficient financially, has no minor children to consider, is intelligent, talented, and beautiful. If anyone should be standing up for Brooke it should be Brooke. I don’t see anything being imposed upon her because she does allow it. I understand she loves the guy deeply so that’s a choice the writers have her make…to put up with it. But who’s to say she hasn’t finally had enough? And we tune in to see if that happens.

There have to be couples who are torn. Last summer it was Eric and Quinn when Eric condoned and encouraged Quinn’s relationship with Carter. That could be seen as both sexism and ageism.

If everyone on soaps stood up for him or herself all the time there would be no stories to tell. No tension. Part of the drama is to see how long a character, in this case, Brooke, is going to continue to accept how things are in a relationship…in this case with Ridge.

There’s also budgeting to consider – how many actors can they hire to have these characters hook up with romantically lol?

All so true. Soaps are about relationship challenges, not happy couples.

I hate the pattern of men having the upper hand and disrespecting women. I wish there was more variety then this same old triangle.

I could agree with every word if it weren’t for the fact that Bridge keeps going around this same circle. Pick a year, so it’s not new or fresh. But you have helped me.
