WOBB 3.0 is coming... (General)

by Admin ⌂ @, New York, Monday, August 24, 2020, 11:30AM (38 days ago)

To celebrate the recent return of brand new episodes of The Bold and the Beautiful, we thought we'd let everyone know that we've been hard at work on forum upgrades and improvements. And while we don't have anything specific to announce just yet, we wanted to give everyone a heads up to let you know that even when the show had to pause production, we've been keeping busy here!

While we're still working on the updates, we'd like you to provide some feedback to help us determine what to focus on now, as well as what else to work on for future versions.

So let us know what you'd like to see by replying here. While we can't promise we'll be able to add every feature that people suggest, we can assure you that we will give every suggestion due consideration. And if you intend to ask us to make it easier to access the board on your phone, you can rest assured that the primary goal of the update was to make sure that the days of squinting at tiny links on your phone will soon be gone forever!

An indicator on the forum index that shows when a new post was added to a thread would be nice. Then we wouldn't have to click on the thread only to find out that there's nothing new.

An ignore feature.

Thanks for the upgrade!

I don't think "ignore" is what is needed. I'd say a block feature. That stops a person you block from seeing anything you write.

I'd like a 'like' post button.

As already suggested, a "block" button would be nice, if one wants to ignore a poster. I won't point out anyone in particular, but there is one poster who systematically responds to all of my posts, and who is off topic most of the time. It rarely brings anything constructive to the discussion. And I see this person is doing it with a lot of other posters. It does bother me, frankly.

Furthermore I think a message board should be more for OPINIONS and less for debates. I would only allow 1 post per person for each thread, and only direct responses to the OP. The OP posts spoilers or an opinion and the responses to the OP are locked and no one can add another post. This would be the best way to avoid the unending baiting and fan wars. Everyone is entitled to his opinion and should be respected. It is also more respectful to the person who starts the thread. All the threads would look like this one:

Yeah, I don't think limiting posts per thread or by day would work at all. Many times I reply to different people's questions or messages in the same thread - adding them up in a single reply would make it difficult for the person who's message I'm replying to, to realize that their question has been answered.
It would basically destroy the purpose of this board.

It is not really a suggestion; but I think it would be nice to have more more members around here.
I read this forum since late 2016/early 2017 & the number of vocal users has never evolved. A lot of former users are gone (for various reasons) & new ones registered, but the number of people voicing their opinions has not increased or decreased.
BandB has 35 Millions viewers & a large percentage of them speaks english. The Official FB page has nearly 1 million followers. I regret so few viewers come here.
I would love to see new people. Other from the same 30 habitual posters who repeat the same things every day. Apart from that, this forum is GREAT. No need to change a thing for me. :-) :-) :-)

This would be very Nice if it could be achieved! I think a few of the suggestions made (block/Ignore button, like /dislike button/simple polls,...) Would help greatly to activate 'lurkers' into participants. People could voice their opinion without having to worry about defending that opinion or arguing with others who dissagree.

Every board like this has some of that going on. I have seen far worse on other boards who have MORE participants. And when I say far worse, I mean "far. worse." For our disagreements, this board is pretty good about disagreeing. There are always some clowns in every bunch, but that's just what it is.

I think it's just that people do not KNOW about this board is all.

Thanks. I think an ignore/mute feature would be in order. That way, a poster who doesn't agree with what I post about a character can just put me on ignore instead of responding to my every post, trying to change my mind on the subject.

This may be controversial but I think you should do away with the "expanded thread" thing where we can see and click on all the replies on the first page. I wish the new format could be more "message board like", if that makes any sense. Meaning the first page should have only folded threads and there should be no option to expand them. Then, when one clicks on the thread, you can see all the replies (open in thread feature).

I believe the expanded thread feature kinda facilitates the arguing because you can just click on specific posters' replies instead of having to actually scroll down and read the entire thread.

So, the first page would look like this (folded threads):

From that, it should go straight to this when you click on a thread:

Then there would have to be a better indication (than the current colour change) for there being unread messages in that thread, and a way to see which messages are the new ones.

Great point - I agree with both of you.
I’d prefer a more traditional message board approach, with the corresponding standard features.

Yes. If it becomes more like a traditional board, you would have to get notifications of any new replies to your post. Right now I think you have to physically check for new replies (or get email notifications) which I don't want.

And not just new replies to your post, but to any thread. Many times I read the replies and don't post to it, but still want to see the new replies.

An ignore/block feature would be wonderful.

The message board presently is good for me. The only thing I would like is after I read a post & go back to the Home Page, it takes me all the way back up to the beginning. I would like to see the next post where I left off. Can you tell me how to enlarge the letters that I type into the Message block? They are so tiny.

Thanks

I think a built in character limit on posts would be helpful. Especially when posters quote long segments of transcripts, replies stack up and it gets difficult to read - especially on a mobile device.

There used to be a limit of 7,000 letters per message, when I registered. One day I tried to copy-paste a transcript from an entire episode and it was refused. Apparently it's gone today. A limit of 3,000 or 5,000 letters would be appropriate.

THIS! I never read overly long posts with multiple paragraphs. (especially when one posts the same stuff every day)

Some forums have a feature where, if you hover over the title of a thread it will show you the first several lines of the original post. That way you can see what the thread is about before you click on it.

Thanks for allowing us to give suggestions!

Stop deleting very old threads. I posted a lot of messages when I registered, at some point I had more than 1,000 comments. One day in 2019, all threads between December 2017 and April 2018 had disappeared and suddenly I had less than 500. I don't see the need to delete these old threads. I enjoy reading these old threads from years ago; it's interesting to see who is still there today, who has left and who is new. Or how the opinions progress in time. I have seen posters who had very strong opinions about some chatacters of the show in early 2018, and did a 180 today. Some posters love to introduce themselves in their very 1st comment, but these threads have disappeared for most of them. It's also a way to keep our "comments count" intact. Even better: add back all these deleted threads. I see posters who registered in middle 2008, so I assume this is when the forum was created. I participate in discussions on sports, medical and video games message boards and we still have the history of every discussions since 1997, for one of them, 2002-2003 for 2 others. They leave everything public since the day of the creation. There are currently 1141 pages of threads (= around 11,400 threads) here, and I would love to have older threads back. If it isn't possible, I will understand. Thank you.
Some mentionned the ignore/block feature. I think a limit of posts per day would be appropriate, too. When I registered, I rememeber how the Steam fans very being targetted until the couple's breakup in July 2018. There were 3 Lope fans (they aren't posting anymore today) responding "Steffy just banged her father-in-law" (or messages with similar content) to every single posters that had a different opinion. These 3 easily had over 100 posts per day and never allowed anyone to have an opposite opinion. This kind of scenario should be avoided. I still think some posters are abusing with this, today. I only log in 2 or 3 times a week and I rarely post more than 5 messages per day. A limit of 10 or 15 messsages would be nice, in my opinion. There are hardly ever more than 15 new threads in 24 jours, anyway. Again, I totally understand if it is not possible. I am suggesting ways for improvement, like you asked.

I wasn't on this board in 2018 (I can only imagine) but this still happens to this day. It's like if you post something positive about your favorite character, you suddenly get bombarded with posts bringing up unrelated events and stuff from years ago. There are some who will respond to every post that doesn't praise their preferred character(s).

Then people end up arguing about stuff that is completely unrelated to the original post. I think the ignore feature would help. Muting can really improve one's posting experience.

The reason these posts probably get deleted when they are old is because it costs money for storage. I don't agree with limiting people's number of posts. I also disagree that fans bases get targeted. Right now, for instance, Brooke is always getting negative comments. I'm a Brooke fan. I do NOT feel targeted by negative Brooke posts, but it is disappointing to be unable to talk rationally about Brooke. Some people who are not Brooke fans might feel the same way, so....

I think we just have to be respectful and tolerantate and it's VERY IMPORTANT to NEVER think YOU are being targeted.

This board has kind of a retro feel to it that is unlike most other message boards, and I do like that. But as far as suggestions for improving it

1) A like or heart button would be great.
2) Hovering over the title of the post and being able to see the first line or so is very helpful.
3) Updated guidelines that everyone must agree to in order to continue posting.
4) Accounts that have not been used for over a year could be eliminated (to save space, data, etc.)

Just some thoughts.

Don't mean to reply to myself, but I thought of one other thing and it was too late to edit.

Enhancing the search function would be great. Being able to search within multiple parameters, or even doing a search within a search. For instance, to be able to search by a word, and then with those results, search by date, user, additional word, etc.

Like the previous poster stated, updated rules would be great. They seem to change a lot over time. They have not been updated since May 2019 and I think other rules could be added.

The rule about "Actors bashing" should me more strict, especially for the clothing and the physical appearances of the actors/actresses. I don't mind someone saying the acting for actor A is better than actor B, but it shouldn't go further. I read too much negativity about 3 or 4 actors in particular. B&B is the most popular soap opera in the world, Bell only hires talented actors and they all look great, so I think they deserve all respect.

The rule about derogatory words should be more specific. Are words like "sluts, skunks, pigs, sleaze, slimeballs, tramps, hookers,..." allowed or not? It seems like this rule differs from 1 year to another. In 2018 it was allowed. In 2019 all of a sudden it was stricly forbidden, and now I see it a lot again and I was told it's allowed again. It should be made clear on the "rules" thread.

I have more examples but I stop here, maybe other posters will complete it. Anyway, the rules thread needs a good update, that's my suggestion.

I disagree when it comes to wardrobe unless actors are picking their own clothes. I don't think they are. Let me know if I'm wrong.

Otherwise, I do strongly agree that no one should get personal about each other or about the actors.

I think it’s hilarious to make fun of the various stuff the talent has to wear. Steffy’s wigs and Hope’s fringe, for example. It’s never personal, in the same way the dialogue isn’t personal. It’s a function of the show.

I second this post, especially around more clarity for actor/actress bashing. Shaming actual people for their age, looks, talent, idiosyncrasises, etc. should be discouraged and not permitted. As well, I agree that certain terms/words should be screened so that they can't be used in a post.

I also like the limit on characters/words in a post, an ignore feature, and PM.

Take seriously the banned posters who create multiple accounts and continue to post. One banned poster has at least 2, probably 3 accounts and is allowed to continue to post. I literally laugh out loud when he/she posts in support to his/her alter ego.

I'd also like to see more fairness in moderation. Posts should be pulled because of quality of complaint, not volume of complaints.

And please inform the reason for a post being reported and deleted. Or at least include the deleted post in your warning. I have been reported once and I still have no clue which rule I violated or which post it was that was reported to the admins.

Yeah, I think the moderation could be a lot more neutral and lenient.

How about sections for the board? A section for Logan fans, a section for Forrester fans. That way people can make threads that are specified to that fan base only with no bashing. I think it would reduce arguing and people wouldn’t feel as if they are being attacked.

Well you know in a way we do have an ignore feature here: the set up of the board.

You don’t see a post unless you click on it. Unlike at SC or SSK where you see every post unless you scroll past.

So, if I see a name that I know is probably going to be an argumentative post, I just don’t click that post.

Also, we have the ability to see new posts to a thread by looking at the right hand side of the board. You can’t see who made the post, but you can see that there is a new one and what thread it is.

This board would benefit by being set up the way the old Xena board was, where they had sections for various fandoms. Example, a section for fans of Xena/Gabrielle as a couple and a section for Xena/Ares as a couple.

That would spare us the arguments if we could have a Hope fan section, Steffy fan section, etc..as well as threads getting derailed with the fan wars which imo is a big problem at this board. A thread starts off about one thing and ends up being the 19098764689th argument about who Liam loves more/who is more worthy of him.

I skip most of it.

Also, we have the ability to see new posts to a thread by looking at the right hand side of the board. You can’t see who made the post, but you can see that there is a new one and what thread it is.

That feature unfortunately is only useful if a) people don't post often, or b) you're checking the board constantly. The older new posts can't be seen unless you look at the previous pages and see if anybody has posted to those threads that might be a day old. And apparently people don't do that as I'm also active on this board when America is sleeping or just waking up, and many times I find out that the responses I've made in that time have about 9 views altogether (even days later).

Something I've been wondering...is the board routinely screened for rule violations or do you rely on people to report posts that break the rules? I'm particularly wondering about the rule that states derogatory nicknames are forbidden. "Hope the Dope" and other variations of that offensive nickname are routinely posted and seem to not get deleted. Should they be reported?

I don't agree, respectfully. I don't mind long posts. I frequently visit other soap boards and I see lots of very long content over there. I only see a few ones doing so, on this one. If someone isn't interested in reading long messages, he is free to skip it and read the next one. Everyone should be free to choose the content and the length of his messages. I have a bigger issue with repeated posts on the some thread. It shocks me when I see the same username in more than 10 different posts on the same thread. Once you've expressed your feeling about the OP's opinion, there is no need to answer to every single posts on the thread. I'd love the "ignore" feature too, on the other hand. And a private message feature (directly from one profile to another)

In part, it has to do with the way this particular board is set up. Very long posts on a traditional message board are generally “one and done” - read it and move on.

On this board, where it’s necessary to quote posts to keep the conversation straight, it means that a longer thread is almost impossible to read on any type of mobile device. It also makes finding the actual new message difficult.

If a character limit is a factor, posts like that would be ok. The issue is more when a poster drops 8 paragraphs of transcripts and analysis in the middle of a thread. IMO.

by Soap-Passion @, Sunday, August 30, 2020, 1:12AM (32 days ago) @ Admin

An update of the rules would be wonderful. A few examples here:

- The rule about the actor bashing. But 2 other posters already explained it well, so I won't repeat it. I just think it should be clarified.

- The pictures - what is allowed and what is not? Is it allowed to upload the cover of a magazine or a page of a magazine? I thought there were issues with copyrights, but I see threads with magazines pictures and they don't disappear. Sometimes the thread is deleted, other times it sticks on the board. A more specific rule should be added in the rules thread.

- Discussing other boards/ talking about the other viewers' opinions and the popularity of actors/characters. I really don't know where is the line, at this point. 2 weeks ago, there was a thread describing how Flo and Wyatt were "being dragged on Twitter", and it wasn't deleted, but the next day a similar thread about Hope was immediately deleted. I also see more and more threads with posters debating polls from other boards or discussing about trends on Facebook and Twitter. I always hesitate to participate in these discussions because one day such threads get deleted and the following day it stays on the board. I think a very specific rule needs to be added about this.

- Another thing that upsets me is posters speaking for other fans (or even for the entire vieweship). Sentences like "we all know Brooke is..." or "the majority agrees with me". Or "Steffy fans want this", and "no Hope fans want that". I have done it myself because there is no specific rule. I would appreciate if this part could be clarified.

Thanks.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

One more thing, I'd like to have more categories for new topics. It would be more helpful for the guests. For now we have "general", "spoilers" and "off topic" but other categories could be added. Here are a few suggesions:

"Rumors" or "spumors" (for unverified spoilers with no sources)
"Speculations" or "predictions" (the poster predicts something will happen)
"Wishes" (the poster explains what he/she wants to happen)
"Articles" (recap of a SOD article, recap of an episode, or analysis from another site)
"Questions" (the poster has a question about an episode or a character/storyline, or anything related to B&B)
"Opinion request" (the poster wants to know the opinion of other posters about a character or a storyline or the soap in general)
"Ratings" (for the last ratings report or for a specific discussion about ratings)
"History" (for a discussion about an old storyline - one that has no impact on the current storylines. Or a discussion about a character/couple who is no longer on canvas...)
"Off topic" and "spoilers" stay.
The rest falls under "general" (the OP shares an opinion about a current/recent character, couple or storyline, or another aspect of the soap)

(And, of course, each poster would be forced to pick the right category before he/she submits the thread.)

I don't know why people can't make their posts as long as needed. With the exception being, of course, if they're purposely trying to make a thread unreadable. But, I haven't seen any of that. If a subject interests me I'll read the long threads, so long as they're broken up into paragraphs. If someone doesn't like to read them they don't have to. But why begrudge others?

While we're still working on the updates, we'd like you to provide some feedback to help us determine what to focus on now, as well as what else to work on for future versions.

So let us know what you'd like to see by replying here. While we can't promise we'll be able to add every feature that people suggest, we can assure you that we will give every suggestion due consideration. And if you intend to ask us to make it easier to access the board on your phone, you can rest assured that the primary goal of the update was to make sure that the days of squinting at tiny links on your phone will soon be gone forever!

Oh man posters are writeing these long long threads like magazine articles then you gotta read scroll short and sweet is better ....too long ...this is a soap surely opinions can condense a half hour show opinion ..they go on and on about varied topics ...yikes

I rarely read the long ones who is begrudging merely offering a opinion ....it’s annoying to keep scrolling on and on hey I open it up see it and close it ..to each their own they wanted suggestions I made mine

I didn't mean for my response to sound like I was criticizing you. Was just offering a different perspective. ;-)

I rarely post anything longer than 5 or 6 lines, but I alwaya enjoy a good, long analysis. I agree with your perspective :)

Me too. And some of the posters are so smart and so good with the history of the show.

We seriously need an ignore or blocking feature. They simply will not let me post my comments in peace. I don't know why everything I post has to be analyzed. Why can't some posters get that not everyone likes the same characters that they do? They will stalk your every post.

Have been posting for a long time and it's the best board ever. Don't even bother to go to other boards. Have appreciated Scott and everyone else for a long time. Thank you for your time and especially your patience.

The only thing I would ask is if there is a way to cut some of the very long threads in half.

Some times the pictures make the threads longer than they need to be. Takes forever to scroll down to the new replies when on mobile. I usually try to take the code for the pic out when I quote reply. I wonder if it can be made so that the pic only shows up in the OP, even when it's quoted.

If you use Chrome as your browser, it has spell check built in. It will underline a word that isn't spelled correctly. I have to use it often. :cool
