How will the show handle the adoption aspect of this story?

the adoption makes no difference, they're both his parents, whether biologically or adoptively
either they share custody 50/50 or one of them will be the custodial parent while the other has visitation,
currently it's thomas that has visitation, but that's what they're aiming to change
