So what did Sally have to apologize for? (General Discussion)

I understand everyone feeling bad for Thomas. I understand saying "I'm sorry for your loss" and not feeling that Caroline deserved to die or that Douglas or Thomas deserve what they are going through.

I don't exactly understand what Sally felt she had to apologize to Thomas for though. I get the impression she felt she needed to apologize to him for some things she may have said after he moved her to New York and then dumped her for Caroline again. Why? Whatever has now happened to Caroline, Thomas was still a jerk for doing that.

When I read the spoiler I thought maybe they were going to reveal something we didn't know to make Thomas more sympathetic in that situation but that does not seem to be the case. He kind of shrugged and said "Yeah, sorry for that" referring to what he did to Sally. He did have a need to apologize, but I think Sally could have just said, "I'm very sorry for your loss and whatever happened I don't think anyone deserved this" without having to say she was sorry for letting him deservedly have it for how badly he handled their relationship.
