Sad. They couldn't do much but watch it burn. They were trying to save some of the art. Hopefully some of it was saved. I believe the cathedral was 860 years old. Heartbreaking to watch

The foundation stone was laid in 1163. :cry

Amazing what they were able to build that long ago.

I still hope they can save the foundation (the roof already being lost) and the two towers that still are standing and that it won't burn down to the ground completely.

It's horrible. Notre-Dame was the most visited Cathedral in Europe. I just heard 15 millions people a year. I have never visited it, but I went to Paris several times and walked near the monument. Enormous loss for the cultural heritage.

Heartbreaking to watch such an ancient and revered historic building be so damaged. Hopefully, it will be possible to rebuild as well as finding out how the fire started. The building was undergoing renovations, so perhaps it was a terrible accident. I'm praying it wasn't arson or a terrorist attack. :cry

It can be repaired, but it won’t be the same.

So much lost! The incredible artwork. The amazing organ that had something like 8,000 pipes! There were also priceless and irreplaceable relics stored in the cathedral. Hopefully, they were stored in fire retardant, cement vaults!!

Yes. Amazing that it had been there for over 800 years. 9 centuries. So much lost. To watch it burn made me feel sickened and sad. It’s devastating.

Also, I am very skeptical that this fire was accidental.

I read that the artwork stored there has been saved. That organ had just been cleaned and refurbished.

Just heard that they managed to save The CROWN OF THORNS . I didn't realise that they had it there let alone that it's survived all these years . It's a miracle that the Crown was saved especially since Easter is just a few days away.

Yes! I didn’t realize that myself until my husband told me.

It can’t be repaired. It would have to be totaled rebuilt. But I hardly see the point, it wouldn’t be the same.

Maybe rebuilt would have been a better word.

On a side note, the soap General Hospital was preempted today, because of this event.
