There is nothing more powerful to me than a redemption story

I agree. Thomas was "tested" several times by the show, his latest test being when he left Hope to go to Paris.
If he were still obsessed he never would have left her. Other tests were Xander e.g. or when Hope said she would try to make up with Liam after the mermaid party. He was sad but not obsessing. They took nearly a year to redeem him.

For me Xander was not a test. He never told the whole story. He smiled after he saw that young woman dead. He said nothing to capture his hideousness that night. He did not talk about it the way he talked to Ridge about it. He softened the story. They have yet to do Thomases story to me. There is more to Thomas than Hope and her issues.

Plus he only came clean when he was caught. If he had really been redeemed he would have told Hope the whole story before Xander came back. And even then he didn't say everything.
